Rebuild a Healthier Tear Film

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes cannot produce enough healthy tears or when tears evaporate too quickly to keep the surface of the eye lubricated. A healthy tear film consists of three essential layers (oil, water, and mucus) that work together to protect the cornea, maintain clear vision, and provide lasting comfort. When any part of this delicate system becomes unbalanced, the eyes may become dry, irritated, inflamed, or prone to fluctuating vision.

At OnSight Eye Center, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating dry eye disease. Rather than simply masking symptoms with artificial tears, we identify the underlying cause and develop a personalized treatment plan using advanced therapies to restore a healthier tear film, improve comfort, and support your long-term eye health.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eyes:

  • A stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation in the eyes
  • A gritty feeling, as though something is stuck in your eye
  • Red, irritated, or inflamed eyes
  • Blurry or fluctuating vision, especially after reading or screen use
  • Excessive tearing or watery eyes as a response to irritation
  • Light sensitivity (photophobia)
  • Eye fatigue or discomfort during prolonged visual tasks
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses comfortably
  • Thick or stringy mucus around the eyes
  • Frequent blinking to improve vision or relieve discomfort
  • Dryness that worsens in windy, dry, or air-conditioned environments
  • Difficulty driving at night due to fluctuating vision

You Have Several Dry Eye Treatment Options

Because dry eye disease can have multiple underlying causes, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. At OnSight Eye Center, we perform a thorough evaluation to determine why your eyes are dry before recommending treatment. Your personalized plan may include one therapy or a combination of treatments to improve tear quality, reduce inflammation, restore healthy gland function, and provide lasting relief.

ZEST/BlephEx Lid Treatment

ZEST and BlephEx are in-office eyelid cleaning treatments that help remove bacteria, debris, biofilm, and other buildup from the eyelid margins, where chronic inflammation often begins. Depending on your condition and treatment needs, your doctor may recommend either therapy to improve eyelid hygiene, reduce inflammation, support healthier meibomian gland function, improve tear quality, and relieve symptoms associated with blepharitis and evaporative dry eye.

Meibomian Gland Expression

Healthy meibomian glands release oils that slow tear evaporation and stabilize the tear film. When these glands become blocked, tears evaporate too quickly, leaving your eyes irritated and uncomfortable. Meibomian gland expression gently clears blocked glands, restoring healthy oil flow to improve tear stability, enhance comfort, and support long-term eye health.

Punctal Plugs/Lacrifill

If your eyes do not retain enough tears, punctal plugs or Lacrifill may help. These treatments temporarily reduce tear drainage, allowing your natural tears to remain on the eye’s surface longer for improved lubrication. Lacrifill uses a hydrogel that conforms to your tear drainage system, while traditional punctal plugs provide a simple, effective method of tear retention.

Prescription Medications

Prescription medications can play an important role in treating dry eye disease by targeting its underlying causes rather than simply offering temporary relief. Anti-inflammatory eye drops help calm chronic inflammation on the ocular surface, allowing the tear film to function more effectively. Miebo® reduces excessive tear evaporation by stabilizing the tear film, while Tyrvaya® nasal spray stimulates your body’s natural tear production through a nerve pathway to improve long-term eye comfort.

Autologous Serum Tears

Autologous serum tears are custom eye drops made from your own blood, closely mimicking the composition of natural tears. Rich in growth factors, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory proteins, they support healing of the ocular surface without artificial preservatives. Rather than simply lubricating the eyes, they help regenerate damaged tissue and are an excellent option for severe aqueous-deficient dry eye and Sjögren syndrome.

Amniotic Membrane Therapy

Amniotic membrane therapy with Prokera® delivers regenerative proteins directly to the ocular surface through a specialized device worn like a contact lens for approximately 5 to 14 days. This advanced treatment helps reduce inflammation, accelerate healing, and protect the cornea, making it an effective option for persistent corneal damage, recurrent erosions, and severe dry eye that has not responded to conventional therapies.
